HEAD STARTER MEETING SET FOR APRIL 15 AT CHURCHILL DOWNS

The Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) will host a one-day meeting for head starters on April 15 at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., to discuss a wide variety of issues related to the starting gate and the start of races. The most recent head starters’ conference was held at Keeneland in 2006 and produced a lively exchange of ideas and best practices among the 19 starters in attendance.

This year’s meeting will be complemented by the perspectives of jockeys, trainers, and track management on gate activities, especially on safety and equine welfare issues.

The agenda will include examination of the starting gate crews’ priorities, various schooling and loading techniques, storage and exchange of starters’ informational data, and informal dialogue with jockeys and horsemen.

In addition, the meeting will include an examination of management and personnel responsibilities for head starters, as well as a review of general insurance loss information stemming from activity surrounding the start of a race.

Registration is $35 for starters at TRA-member racetracks and $95 for starters at non-member associations.

Click HERE for more information or contact the TRA office at 410-392-9200.

The TRA is a non-profit organization of 44 North American racetrack associations whose races generate a combined handle representing more than 75 percent of the more than $15 billion wagered annually on Thoroughbred horse racing.
