    Email Bookmark and Share

June 29, 2009 -  Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra, ridden by Calvin Borel, scored her seventh straight win Saturday at Belmont Park in the Grade I $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes. The 3-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly was sent off as the overwhelming 1-20 favorite and proved the bettors correct as she trounced her two rivals by 19 ¼ length winning margin.

Owned by Stonestreet Stables and Harold McCormick and trained by this year’s leading trainer, Steve Asmussen, Rachel Alexandra set a new stakes record of 1:46.33. The previous mark of 1:46.58 was set by Lakeway in 1994.

Well Armed leads the equine standings with $3,649,000 in 2009 earnings. Mine That Bird is second with $1,817,200 and Rachel Alexandra’s win increased her earnings to $1,596,914 to remain in third.

Julien Leparoux continues to dominate the jockeys’ standings with 2009 purse earnings of $8,706,510. Garrett Gomez is second on the jockeys’ standings with $8,013,770 and Rafael Bejarano is third with $7,820,564.

Steve Asmussen’s current purses are $9,603,899 as he continues to lead the trainers’ standings, well ahead of Todd Pletcher in second with $5,615,095 and Eoin Harty in third with $4,268,926.

Equine earnings are for all starters of at least one race in North America and include earnings from all international races. Trainer and jockey standings are for North American-based individuals but include all international earnings.
